In 2022 the Biden Administration initiated a new program to increase the transparency of corporate chains operating nursing homes. CMS has produced data on the performance of nursing homes within nursing home chains like Genesis Healthcare, ManorCare, Life Care Centers of America, Ensign Group Brookdate Senior Living and Medical Facilities of America. The data includes measures of staffing levels, average star ratings for quality, enforcement remedies, MDS measures, Covid-19 vaccination rates and other metrics.
Every entity operating multiple nursing homes is assigned a name and number and data is aggregated to track the performance of such facilities across multiple states. This new database is designed to track the quality of care across all the nursing homes that are affiliated with a particular large chain.
It’s no secret that some of the largest nursing home chain operators have a consistent track record of poor performance, explains nursing home attorney Jeffrey Downey. Such nursing homes rank poorly on government surveys and have a high incidence of avoidable outcomes like pressure wounds (bed sores), falls, weight loss, infection, low staffing levels and unexplained injuries.
