What are the Worst Rates Nursing Homes in or Near Washington DC

Medicare, through CMS, rates nursing homes based on the results of annual surveys taken for every nursing home in the United States that receives federal funding.  CMS uses a star rating system, with one star being the worst and 5 stars being the best.

It’s important to understand that these rating represent just a snapshot of the nursing home’s performance based on annual inspections, staffing information and various quality measures used by CMS, explains Washington D.C. Nursing Home attorney Jeffrey J. Downey.  The below list represents some of the lowest rated nursing homes, which are well below average. If you are interested in selecting a nursing facility, you should do an in-person visit and review their statements of deficiencies, which can be accessed through the Freedom of Information Act.

Substandard nursing homes can cause neglect from understaffing that can cause residents to suffer pressure wounds, (bed sores), fractures,  unexplained bruising, infections, sepsis,  medication errors, elopements, physical abuse, failure to diagnose medical conditions and wrongful death.

When possible, you should try and avoid the below facilities unless there are no other alternatives available.  Unfortunately, some facilities that accept Medicaid patients can often be understaffed and end up being among the lowest rated facilities. If you are a Medicaid patient, you may have limited choices in selecting a long-term care facility, so get on the waiting list for good facilities as soon as practicable. The problem is worse in Washington DC, as there are already a limited number of nursing homes available. However, Washington hospitals will make referrals to nursing facilities in Virginia and Maryland.
